Queen Mary I of England, also known as Mary Tudor, was born on February 18, 1516. She was the daughter of King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. Mary became Queen of England in 1553 after the death of her younger brother, Edward VI. Mary was a devout Catholic and sought to return England to Roman Catholicism after her father's establishment of the Church of England. She married Philip II of Spain in 1554, but their union was unpopular among her subjects. Mary's reign was marked by political and religious turmoil, with her persecution of Protestants earning her the nickname "Bloody Mary." Mary died on November 17, 1558, ending her five-year reign.
