Chester A. Arthur was an American politician who served as the 21st President of the United States, from 1881 to 1885. Born in Vermont in 1829, Arthur established a successful law practice in New York City before transitioning into politics. He was appointed as the Collector of the Port of New York, where he fought against corruption and made significant reforms. Arthur became Vice President in 1880 and ascended to the presidency after President James Garfield was assassinated. During his presidency, Arthur implemented civil service reforms and modernized the US Navy. He passed away in 1886 in New York City.
