Harry S. Truman was the 33rd President of the United States, serving from 1945 to 1953. Born in Missouri in 1884, Truman had a modest upbringing. He served in World War I and later entered politics, becoming a U.S. senator in 1934. Truman assumed the presidency after the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt and made the controversial decision to drop atomic bombs on Japan, ending World War II. He also implemented the Marshall Plan for post-war Europe and founded NATO.
