Fidel Castro (1926-2016) was a Cuban revolutionary and politician who served as the Prime Minister and President of Cuba. He led the Cuban Revolution, overthrowing the government of Fulgencio Batista in 1959. Castro implemented socialist reforms, nationalizing industries and redistributing land, which led to strained relations with the United States during the Cold War. He was a charismatic leader known for his long speeches and iconic olive green military uniform. Despite controversy surrounding his regime, Castro remained in power for nearly five decades before stepping down in 2008.
