Thomas Paine was a political activist, philosopher, and revolutionary who played a crucial role in the American and French revolutions during the late 18th century. Born in England in 1737, Paine immigrated to the American colonies in 1774. His influential pamphlet, "Common Sense," published in 1776, advocated for independence from British rule and inspired many colonists to support the revolutionary cause. Paine also penned "The American Crisis" series, providing encouragement to the American troops during their darkest hours. In France, Paine continued to champion revolutionary ideas in support of democracy and human rights. His work, "Rights of Man," defended the principles of the French Revolution and criticized monarchy and aristocracy. Despite facing opposition and persecution, Paine remained dedicated to his beliefs in liberty and equality until his death in 1809.
