Betty Williams was a Northern Irish peace activist known for her work to end the sectarian violence during the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Born in 1943 in Belfast, Williams co-founded the Peace People movement in 1976, which aimed to bring together Catholics and Protestants in the pursuit of peace. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1976, along with co-founder Mairead Corrigan, for their efforts in promoting nonviolent solutions to the conflict. Williams continued her activism and advocacy work for peace and human rights throughout her life, becoming an influential and beloved figure in the peace movement.
